As far as we can tell, there is nowhere you can place binary options trades on the weekend—but that does not mean you cannot trade over the weekend. What is the difference? It has to do with expiry times. You cannot for example do a 60-second trade on a weekend. But you can enter into a week long trade starting on Friday morning and ending the same time the following week. That would have you in your trade over the weekend.

Why can’t you place trades on the weekends? The reason is that the markets are closed over the weekend. When you trade binary options, you are trading underlying assets such as stocks, currencies, commodities, and indices. Since the markets are closed, you cannot continue to interact with them. I have visited dozens of binary options websites while doing my research for this site, and I have yet to see a single one that is open for orders on a weekend. Most of them actually take down their entire trading interface, and put up a notice that trading is closed for the weekend in its place. Customer service is generally inaccessible during weekends as well, which is one more reason you do not want to deal with trading on market days off.

As I mentioned before, however, you can be in a trade during a weekend, but you will be unable to interact with it until you get back from the break. You can do this on any trading platform which offers you longer expiry times, ranging from a few days to longer time periods like a week or more. Position traders (traders who specialize in trading over long time periods) are in trades over one or more weekends quite regularly.

Examples of Trading Over the Weekend

  • It’s Friday morning, and you see a trading opportunity that interests you and expires on Monday night. This is a four-day expiry time which will span across the weekend. You enter into the trade on Friday morning. The markets close and re-open, and the trade ends on Monday night. While you did nothing over the weekend, you were still in the trade.
  • You are a position trader who has reason to believe that the price of gold will be going up and up over the next several months. You find a broker that offers you long-term trading positions, and you buy gold today and choose an expiry a month later. You will be in the trade over the next four weeks, including the weekends.

Cautions About Weekend Trading

Even though you can be in a trade over the weekend, you may not want to. While the market is closed over the weekend, real life does not shut down. A lot of things happen over the weekend, and when everyone comes back from the market break, you can expect a lot of volatility to reflect the changes that happened over the weekend. The resulting uncertainty can be problematic, especially if you choose an expiry time that directly follows the end of a weekend. Wouldn’t you hate to exit your trade at a loss because your expiry happened at the same time as all that volatility? Especially if you would have gone on to win had another few hours or days elapsed? A lot of traders trade during the middle of the week to avoid this sort of thing, or place longer-term trades which will not close at such an awkward time.

For more information on this topic and related topics, see our article on when not to trade binary options. None of this is to say that you should never trade over weekends, but if you do, we suggest you think very hard about your expiry and whether you will be ejected from your trade into a losing scenario. Definitely test any trading methods which incorporate weekend trades thoroughly to determine the best expiry times.
